This week’s prayer focus: What Kind of Person?

“Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?  You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.  So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.”
2 Peter 3:11-14 (NIV)

After writing about God’s patience, Peter reminds us that the day of the Lord will indeed happen — on God’s timetable, not ours.  With that reminder, he asks the question, “What kind of people ought  you to be?”.  To avoid speculation, he goes on to answer the question and those answers will be the basis for our prayer focus this week.  When we live life in Christ, He expects it to be a new life — meaning that we ought to be a different kind of person that what we once were.  As you pray this week, ask God to help you identify specific areas of your life in which you may need additional work to be the kind of person you ought to be.  Pray for the courage to set aside your old way of life in order to be a new kind of person.  Pray for God’s help to make the changes you need to make.  Pray for the humility and grace needed to walk in unison with brothers and sisters who, like you, are at different stages of becoming the kind of person they ought to be.  Pray for a spirit of unity among brothers and sisters in Christ as we grow in our love for one another.  Pray each day for the individuals of your congregation and for the body of Christ as a whole.

Please pray each day for God to help you be the kind of person you ought to be by being the kind of person He created you to be.

Monday:  A Holy Person.  Pray that you would choose to live a life dedicated to God.  Pray for the humility to allow God’s holiness to transform your life into a holy one.  Pray that you would look to Jesus as both the One who calls you to holiness and the One who makes you holy.  “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do.”  1 Peter 1:15 (NIV)

Tuesday:  A Godly Person.  Pray that you would seek God with a desire to reflect His nature in your life.  Pray for the courage to live a godly life that is known by the Lord.  Pray to be the kind of person who is known as one that the Lord hears.  “Know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD will hear when I call to him.”  Psalm 4:3 (NIV)

Wednesday:  A Watchful Person.  Pray that you would make the most of the opportunities that exist because of God’s patience.  Ask God to help you be devoted to prayer as you watch how He is working around you.  Pray that you would be the kind of person who others look to as being both watchful and thankful.  “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”  Colossians 4:2 (NIV)

Thursday:  A Spotless Person.  Pray that you would allow God’s refining to purify you when you stumble.  Pray that you would be the kind of person who seeks God’s help in being cleansed to the point of being spotless.  “Some of the wise will stumble, so that they may be refined, purified and made spotless until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time.”  Daniel 11:35 (NIV)

Friday:  A Blameless Person.  Pray that you would have a heart of discernment that would keep you both pure and blameless.  Pray for the wisdom to seek and know what is best and to pursue it in a blameless way in a world that wants you to settle for less.   “So that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ.”  Philippians 1:10 (NIV)

Saturday:  A Peaceful Person.  Pray that you would be the kind of person who finds peace with God and shares that peace with others.  Pray that your faith in God would lead you to seek peace in all areas of your life and in your relationships with others.  “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”  Romans 5:1 (NIV)

This week’s prayer focus: Dressed For a New Life!

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.  Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.”
Colossians 3:1, 12-13(NIV)

As we begin the week celebrating the resurrection of Jesus, it is a good time to pray about how we should live as those who have been raised with Christ.  God says that because we have been raised with Christ, it is important that we dress appropriately each day.  Just as clothing is important to our physical life, being dressed spiritually is critical as we seek to represent Jesus to the people around us.  We wouldn’t think of going about daily life undressed and being clothed daily with the things of Christ is a necessary part of our walk as a Christ-follower.  As you pray this week, ask God to help you go out into the world each day fully dressed.  Pray that you would be dressed fully in Christ as you live a new life each day.  Pray for a spirit of unity among brothers and sisters in Christ as we grow in our love for one another.  Pray each day for the individuals of your congregation and for the body of Christ as a whole.

Monday:  Dressed With Compassion.  Pray that you would know the compassion of your heavenly Father in a way that leads you to a greater compassion for others.  Pray that you would daily dress yourself with compassion as you represent Jesus to others. “As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.”  Psalm 103:13 (NIV)

Tuesday:  Dressed With Kindness.  Pray for a greater awareness of how God’s kindness came to earth in the human form of Jesus.  Pray that God’s love would fill you in a way that both experiences His kindness and leads you to put on kindness every day as you interact in a world that can be very unkind.  “I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love.”  Hosea 11:4 (NIV)

Wednesday:  Dressed With Humility.  Pray that you would have the wisdom to see yourself and others according to God’s view rather than man’s view.  Pray that you would put on humility daily as you consider the needs of others to be more important than your own.  “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.”  Philippians 2:3 (NIV)

Thursday:  Dressed With Gentleness.  Pray for God’s help in dressing with a gentleness that is evident to others each day.  Pray that the nearness of God to you would be a daily reminder to clothe yourself with gentleness.  Pray that your gentleness would be a reflection of God’s gentleness toward you.  “Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.”  Philippians 4:5 (NIV)

Friday:  Dressed With Patience.  Pray that you would constantly be aware of God’s patience with you as He continually draws you to Himself.  Pray that you would choose to wear the cloak of patience each day as you look for the Lord’s coming.  Pray that your patience would help others to know of God’s patience.  “You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.”  James 5:8 (NIV)

Saturday:  Dressed With Forgiveness.  Pray that you would wear God’s forgiveness each day as you agree with Him about your  great need.  Pray that you would wear the forgiveness of God in such a way that you choose to forgive others just as fully and unconditionally as God forgives you.  “Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.”  Luke 11:4 (NIV)

This week’s prayer focus: The Cross!

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross!”
Philippians 2:5, 8 (NIV)

This week we return to the words of Jesus from the cross to help us focus our prayer time each day!  As the celebration of Resurrection Sunday approaches, it is fitting to not only consider the sacrifice Jesus made, but to apply His very words to how we pray this week.  While not pleasant and joyful like a resurrection, remembering the crucifixion of Jesus is just as important.  As you pray this week, use the topics of this prayer guide to help you pray through difficulties, through weakness, through loneliness, through concern for others, and most importantly through the eyes of Jesus.  Pray about your own attitude when facing opposition.  Pray about the things that were important to Jesus, asking God to help those things become more important to you.  Pray for the humility to consider how the sacrifice of Jesus benefits you . . . and how you ought to sacrifice in ways that benefits others.  Pray for wisdom in sharing the full gospel — the good news of the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.  Pray for a spirit of unity among brothers and sisters in Christ as we grow in our love for one another.  Pray each day for the individuals of your congregation and for the body of Christ as a whole.

Monday:  Father, forgive them.  Pray that you would continually grow in the attitude and practice of forgiveness as seen in the life of Jesus.  Pray that the people you see today would realize and accept the Father’s forgiveness.  “Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’ And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.”  Luke 23:34

Tuesday:  You will be with me.  Pray for a greater desire to deliberately spend time with Jesus as you seek God throughout your day.  Pray for a desire to have others join you as you walk with God.  Pray that the people you interact with today would have a desire to know, and be known, by Jesus.  “Jesus answered him, ‘I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.’”  Luke 23:43

Wednesday:  Behold, your son.  Pray for an attitude of compassion toward those who are alone in this world.  Pray about how God would have you respond to those with no family.  “When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ‘Dear woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.”  John 19:26-27

Thursday:  Why have you forsaken me.  Pray for a heart that breaks with concern for those who feel abandoned by God.  Pray for those who feel forsaken by God; that you would represent Jesus well to them.  “About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?’–which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’”  Matthew 27:46

Friday:  I thirst.  Pray that you would grow in your thirst and desire  for scripture to be fulfilled as you look to God’s Word for guidance on how to live each day.  Pray that the people you see today would have a real thirst for the things of God.  “Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I am thirsty.’”  John 19:28

Saturday:  It is finished.  Pray for the endurance needed to live your life in Christ with a faithfulness to Him that carries you all the way to the finish.  Pray that you would be actively involved in helping people be ready for the time their life on earth is finished.  “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”  John 19:30

This week’s prayer focus: Promises, Promises!

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:9 (NIV)

This week’s prayer emphasis will focus on some of the promises of God.  Promises in the Bible can be difficult for many people to grasp.  Sometimes we tend to define the promise according to our understanding and what we want.  When God promises comfort, how often do we want it to mean we would never experience a pain that would require His comfort?  Even if we understand the nature of the promise accurately, we often expect the promise to be fulfilled in keeping with our timetable rather than God’s.  As you pray this week, ask God to help you grow in your understanding of His “great and precious” promises.  Pray that you would hold fast to His promises, especially when it takes longer for them to be fulfilled than what you would like.  Pray for the heart, mind, and eyes to see how God has not only extended His promises to you, but calls you to share in extending His promises to others. Pray for a spirit of unity among brothers and sisters in Christ as we grow in our love for one another.  Pray each day for the individuals of your congregation and for the body of Christ as a whole.

Monday:  Promised Peace.  Pray that you would listen to God and find a peace in Him that the world cannot take away.  Pray that you would share God’s peace with others as you fully reject a life built on folly.  “I will listen to what God the LORD will say; he promises peace to his people, his saints — but let them not return to folly.”  Psalm 85:8 (NIV)

Tuesday:  Promised Salvation.  Pray that you would know the unfailing love of God that gives the promise of salvation that is based on His goodness.  Pray that you would share with others about the salvation God has brought to you as you live for Him.  “May your unfailing love come to me, O LORD, your salvation according to your promise.”  Psalm 119:41 (NIV)

Wednesday:  Promised Graciousness.  Pray that you would know the graciousness of God as you seek Him with a whole heart.  Pray that you would learn to be gracious with others as you realize how much you experience the graciousness of God’s promises to you.  “I have sought your face with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise.”  Psalm 119:58 (NIV)

Thursday:  Promised Comfort.  Pray that a recognition of God’s unfailing love would comfort you in your times of greatest pain.  Pray that you would be obedient in comforting others with the comfort God has given you according to His promises.  “May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant.”  Psalm 119:76 (NIV)

Friday:  Promised Deliverance.  Pray that you would always turn to God as the one who can meet your needs “according to His riches in glory.”  Pray that you would fully consider how God has delivered you as you share His promises of deliverance to the people around you.  “May my supplication come before you; deliver me according to your promise.”  Psalm 119:170 (NIV)

Saturday:  Promised Eternal Life.  Pray that you would always hold fast to the greatest promise of God — eternal life through Jesus Christ.  Pray that  you would have the courage to speak boldly with others about eternal life as a promise which we can hold on to because the One who promises is faithful.  “And this is what he promised us — even eternal life.”  1 John 2:25 (NIV)

This week’s prayer focus: Common Ground!

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.  There is one body and one Spirit — just as you were called to one hope when you were called — one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.  But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.”
Ephesians 4:3-7 (NIV)

This week’s prayer emphasis will focus on some common ground that ought to exist among believers.  When God instructs us to “keep the unity of the Spirit”, He states not only what we have in common but also the truth that each one of us has been given grace according to a measure determined by Christ.  As you pray this week, ask God to help you know the grace that God has specifically apportioned to you through Christ.  Pray that you would not only know the unity that comes from God’s Spirit, but that you would work diligently at keeping that unity between you and God and between you and others through a strong bond of peace.  Pray that you would cling to the things of God which are “One”.  Pray that you would find common ground through the “oneness” of God given to each of us through the grace of Jesus.   Pray for a spirit of unity among brothers and sisters in Christ as we grow in our love for one another.  Pray each day for the individuals of your congregation and for the body of Christ as a whole.

Tuesday:  One Spirit.  Pray for a willingness to unite yourself with the Lord in order to become one with Him in Spirit.  Pray for a greater unity among believers as each one understands the great value of being one with Him, and with one another, through the same Spirit.  “But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit.”  1 Corinthians 6:17 (NIV)

Wednesday:  One Hope.  Pray for the patience to wait on the realization of the assured hope that you have in Christ.  Pray that the unity God wants us to have would be part of His goodness that we share with others.  “The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.”  Lamentations 3:25-26 (NIV)

Thursday:  One Lord.  Pray that you would live each day acknowledging God as the one and only Lord of your life.  Pray that the unity of the Spirit would be maintained as you and others submit to the One who is Lord of all.  “The LORD will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one LORD, and his name the only name.”  Zechariah 14:9 (NIV)

Friday:  One Faith.  Pray that you would approach God with a bold faith that can see His work in your life and in the lives of others.  Pray that you would know a unity of Spirit as you see all people coming to God through the same faith in that one God.  “There is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.”  Romans 3:30 (NIV)

Saturday:  One Baptism.  Pray that you would know the purpose of the baptism God has called each of us into as we die to self and become clothed with Christ.  Pray that the unity of the Spirit would be maintained, and strengthened, as each of us are clothed with Christ in on baptism.  “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”  Galatians 3:26-27 (NIV)

This week’s prayer focus: Practical Wisdom (Part Five)!

“Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.”
Proverbs 22:17-18 (NIV)

This week’s prayer emphasis wraps up a five week series based on “thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge” found in Proverbs 22 – 24.  It is my prayer that these weeks focused in Proverbs have been helpful to both your prayer life and your interactions with others as a child of God.  To me, that is the heart of the practical wisdom God desires for us to obtain from Him — we use it to grow in connection to Him and we use it to grow in our relationships with others.  As you pray this week, ask God to help you evaluate how much of His wisdom you are tapping into when you seek Him in prayer.  Pray that you would apply the principles and teachings of scripture in a way that makes Jesus both known and desirable among the people around you.  Pray for the courage to forsake the wisdom of the world in order to pursue a greater wisdom.  Pray for the humility necessary to live as one who is wise in a way that the people around you would see the love of Jesus.   Pray for a spirit of unity among brothers and sisters in Christ as we grow in our love for one another.  Pray each day for the individuals of your congregation and for the body of Christ as a whole.

Monday:  Wisdom of Urgency.  Pray that God would help you recognize the urgency of sharing the love of the gospel with those facing a physical death and, even more importantly, with those facing spiritual death.  Pray that you would know the urgency of staying on the path that leads to eternal life.  “Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.”  Proverbs 24:11 (NIV)

Tuesday:  Wisdom of the Soul.  Pray that your soul would be filled with a wisdom that is confirmed by the presence of God’s Spirit.  Pray for an ever-increasing faith that comes from a godly wisdom of an assured hope in Christ.  “Know also that wisdom is sweet to your soul; if you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.”  Proverbs 24:14 (NIV)

Wednesday:  Wisdom of Impartiality.  Pray for the wisdom to not show favoritism toward others based on what they can do for you.  Pray that you would know the impartiality of God as He judges you not as your sins deserve, but according to your faith in His Son.  “These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judging is not good.”  Proverbs 24:23 (NIV)

Thursday:  Wisdom of Priorities.  Pray that God would grant you the wisdom to know the order of importance of the tasks that are before you.  Pray for the wisdom to be a faithful servant in the kingdom of God even as you trust him to build your eternal home.  “Finish your outdoor work and get your fields ready; after that, build your house.”  Proverbs 24:27 (NIV)

Friday:  Wisdom of Being a Good Neighbor.  Pray that you would live with the wisdom of being a good neighbor as you treat others as you would want to be treated.  Pray for the wisdom of integrity as you speak to, and about, your neighbors wherever they may live.  “Do not testify against your neighbor without cause, or use your lips to deceive.”  Proverbs 24:28 (NIV)

Saturday:  Wisdom of Observation.  Pray that you would pay attention to the lessons that God wants you to observe in your surroundings.  Pray for the courage to apply the wisdom which God provides to each one of us through the lessons of life.  “I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw.”  Proverbs 24:32 (NIV)

This week’s prayer focus: Practical Wisdom (Part Four)!

“Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.”

This week’s prayer emphasis is week four in a series based on “thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge” found in Proverbs 22 – 24.  I believe that the best definition I have heard for wisdom is that it is “the practical application of knowledge.”  As  you read scripture, I pray that you recognize God’s desire has always been that we would not just know what His Word says, but that we would live it!  As you pray this week, ask God to help you accept His teachings to the extent that you would put them into practice.  Pray for the courage to apply God’s Word to every aspect of your life.  Pray that you would live life with the wisdom that comes from God in such a way that others would desire to know Him.  Pray for your faith to increase as you trust the ways of God to mold you more into His image each day.  Pray that wisdom is more than another word to learn, but that it becomes a way of life for you.  Pray for a spirit of unity among brothers and sisters in Christ as we grow in our love for one another.  Pray each day for the individuals of your congregation and for the body of Christ as a whole.

Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?”  Proverbs 23:29 (NIV)

Tuesday:  Wisdom of Contentment.  Pray that God would fill you with a contentment that gives you wisdom.  Pray that you would be able to see beyond the temporary appearances that make wickedness seem desirable.  Pray that contentment would guard your desire for the fruits of wickedness.  “Do not envy wicked men, do not desire their company.”  Proverbs 24:1 (NIV)

Wednesday:  Wisdom of Foundations.  Pray that your desire would be to have a life built on the foundation of godly wisdom.  Pray that God would fill you with the understanding of how His wisdom will lead you to the establishment of a house worth living in.  “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established.”  Proverbs 24:3 (NIV)

Thursday:  Wisdom of Power.  Pray that you would know the power of godly wisdom that exceeds the strength of men.  Pray that you would have the wisdom to live by the strength of God’s Word and His Spirit rather than through your own abilities.  “A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength.”  Proverbs 24:5 (NIV)

Friday:  Wisdom of Appropriateness.  Pray for a wisdom from God that gives you appropriate words to say when needed.  Pray that the words you share with others would reflect the practical application of God’s Word in your life in a way that leads them to seek Him.  “Wisdom is too high for a fool; in the assembly at the gate he has nothing to say.”  Proverbs 24:7 (NIV)

Saturday:  Wisdom of Reputation.  Pray for the wisdom to avoid the planning, and acting, of evil which would destroy your reputation among unbelievers.  Pray that your “reputation among outsiders” would be one of integrity and godly righteousness.  Pray for the wisdom to avoid the schemes used by the enemy in an attempt to distract you from God.  “He who plots evil will be known as a schemer.”  Proverbs 24:8 (NIV)

This week’s prayer focus: Practical Wisdom (Part Three)!

“Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.”
Proverbs 22:17-18 (NIV)

This week’s prayer emphasis will continue a series based on “thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge” found in Proverbs 22 – 24.  As I continue through these “sayings of the wise”, I can’t help but think of the words from James which tell all who lack wisdom to ask God.  I wonder how often you and I have read that passage from James, asked God for wisdom, then sat back and wondered why it never appeared to arrive.  I also wonder how many of those times the wisdom we were in need of had already been given by God in His Word.  Many times I find myself asking God for wisdom and instead of a direct answer that I would want, He points me to places in scripture where the wisdom I need can be found.  As you pray this week, ask God to help you really listen to the wisdom He has already provided.  Pray for the courage to apply the words of wisdom God has provided.  Pray that the wisdom of God’s Word would be familiar to you so that it is always “ready on your lips.”  Pray for a spirit of unity among brothers and sisters in Christ as we grow in our love for one another.  Pray each day for the individuals of your congregation and for the body of Christ as a whole.

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”
Ephesians 6:18 (NIV)

Sunday: Pray for your church staff, the preaching and teaching that takes place, the church leadership, the volunteers that are helping in so many areas, the spiritual and financial health of the congregation, and the work of the missions ministry of the church.  Pray for the work of Impact Prayer Ministry.

Monday:  Wisdom of Heart.  Pray to have a heart that would always seek after true wisdom which comes from God.  Pray that the desires and direction of your heart would always be filled with godly wisdom.  Pray that the wisdom of God that you fill your heart with would gladden those around you.  “My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad.” Proverbs 23:15 (NIV)

Tuesday:  Wisdom of Zeal.  Pray for the wisdom to notice, and correct, the desires of your heart.  Pray that you would see beyond the temporary attraction that sin often offers.  Pray that your life would be driven by a fear of the Lord which seeks to honor Him.  “Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the LORD.”  Proverbs 23:17 (NIV)

Wednesday:  Wisdom of Advice.  Pray for wisdom in choosing where you get the advice you follow.  Pray that you would check all advice you receive with God’s Word to make sure it is godly advice.  Pray that the advice you give others would help them stay on the right path.  “Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path.”  Proverbs 23:19 (NIV)

Thursday:  Wisdom of Parents.  Pray for the ability to find and accept wisdom from previous generations.  Pray for parents to have the courage to live life in a way that shows godly wisdom to their children.  Pray that you would live and act with the wisdom of a parent to those who have no parents to look up to.  “Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.”  Proverbs 23:22 (NIV)

Friday:  Wisdom of Truth.  Pray for the wisdom to not only seek truth, but to guard it in your life at all costs.  Pray for a discerning spirit that both knows truth and holds on to it.  Pray that you would be one that speaks truth in love when you absolutely must speak.  “Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding.”  Proverbs 23:23 (NIV)

Saturday:  Wisdom of Ways.  Pray that your heart would be set on God as you seek to keep His ways.  Pray that you would have people in your life who show wisdom of ways by their example.  Pray that the ways of your life would be a godly example to the people around you.  “My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways.”  Proverbs 23:26 (NIV)

This week’s prayer emphasis will continue a series based on “thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge” found in Proverbs 22 – 24.  When paid attention to, these principles can become “lighthouses” that aid in our safe travels through times of rough water and darkness.  Even on good days, they become landmarks to remind us we are on the proper course.  As you pray this week, it is important to remember that these are principles to guide us and shape us into the godly people we are called to be.  Pray that you would be most concerned with learning from and applying these principles in your own life rather than first hammering someone else with them.  Pray that you would have a teachable spirit which is open to both the Word and Spirit of the living God instructing you in the way you ought to live.  Pray for the humility to live out these principles of practical wisdom without coming across to others as a “know-it-all”.  Pray for a spirit of unity among brothers and sisters in Christ as we grow in our love for one another.  Pray each day for the individuals of your congregation and for the body of Christ as a whole.

Tuesday:  Wisdom of Discernment.  Pray for the discernment to know, and avoid, the traps others may set.  Pray that  God would give you the wisdom to recognize when a situation you face seems out of character for those involved.  Pray that you would not set your desires on things which belong to others.  “Do not eat the food of a stingy man, do not crave his delicacies.”  Proverbs 23:6 (NIV)

Wednesday:  Wisdom of Silence.  Pray that you would be “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.”  Pray for the wisdom to be silent when faced with situations when your words would not be productive.  Pray for the courage to avoid foolish arguments.  “Do not speak to a fool, for he will scorn the wisdom of your words.”  Proverbs 23:9 (NIV)

Thursday:  Wisdom of Respect.  Pray that you would value the boundaries for life that God has set in His Word.  Pray for the wisdom to respect the property of others even when they seem powerless to protect it.  Pray for the wisdom to know the difference between godly “ancient boundaries” and those set by man.  “Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless.”  Proverbs 23:10 (NIV)

Friday:  Wisdom of Instruction.  Pray for a heart which is open to instruction as you live with a teachable spirit.  Pray for the wisdom to apply the instruction that God provides through His Word and through the people around you.  “Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.”  Proverbs 23:12  (NIV)

Saturday:  Wisdom of Discipline.  Pray that you would value the receiving of discipline even more than you desire seeing others disciplined.  Pray for the wisdom to apply discipline fairly, both in the lives of other and in your own life.  “Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die.”  Proverbs 23:13 (NIV)

This week’s prayer emphasis will begin a series based on “thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge” found in Proverbs 22 – 24.  God’s Word is meant to be “powerful and active” in our life, but for it to become most effective we must put it into practice.  Wisdom from God’s perspective always involves a practical application of the instruction He gives.  Rather than a focus on acquiring information, godly wisdom is something God expects us to put into practice in every aspect of our life.  As you pray this week, ask God to fill you with a wisdom that is practical in nature.  Pray that you would consider these “sayings of the wise” God has given us for our good.  Pray each day about how you will put this practical wisdom into practice.  Pray that your relationship with God would continually lead you into greater wisdom in your interactions with others.  Pray that the way you apply the wisdom you receive from God would lead others in seeking practical wisdom from Him.  Pray for understanding as you, and others, grow in the practice of wisdom.  Pray for a spirit of unity within your church congregation and within the body of Christ as a whole.  Pray each day for the individuals of your congregation and for the body of Christ as a whole.

Tuesday:  Wisdom of Association.  Pray for the wisdom to carefully consider the temperament of those you choose to most closely associate with.  Pray that you would submit your temper and anger to God so that association with you would be beneficial to others.  “Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered.”  Proverbs 22:24 (NIV)

Wednesday:  Wisdom of Responsibility.  Pray for the wisdom to know the responsibility of the financial obligations you consider before you would commit to them.  Pray that your promises, whether in finances or other areas of life, would not be give lightly.  “Do not be a man who strikes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts.”  Proverbs 22:26 (NIV)

Thursday:  Wisdom of Boundaries.  Pray for the wisdom to respect the boundaries marked out by those before you who have listened to God.  Pray that God would lead you to understand the purpose of boundaries and that you would not attempt to cheat Him, or others, by moving those boundaries.  “Do not move an ancient boundary stone set up by your forefathers.”  Proverbs 22:28 (NIV)

Friday:  Wisdom of Learning Skills.  Pray for the wisdom to know, and improve, the skills God has given you.  Pray that you would help others to improve their skills.  Pray that God would make Himself known to others through the skills He has entrusted you with.  “Do you see a man skilled in his work?  He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.”  Proverbs 22:29 (NIV)

Saturday:  Wisdom of Moderation.  Pray for the wisdom to consider how your actions will appear to others.  Pray that you would apply the wisdom God gives as you represent Him before others.  Pray that godly wisdom would lead you to a life of moderation in all things.  “When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you, and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.”  Proverbs 23:1-2 (NIV)
