“A Lifestyle of Prayer”
This week’s prayer focus: Praying With POWER!
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.”
James 5:16-18 (NIV)
This week our prayer focus will be on some aspects of our prayer life that we need to work on in order for God’s power to flow through our prayers. God says that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Before you start counting yourself out, He goes on to say that Elijah was a man just like us. The power of Elijah’s prayers did not originate with him or the words he used, rather the power came from the God he prayed to. As you pray this week, ask God to help you remove any hindrances to your prayers. Pray that you would spend time aligning your will with God’s rather than trying to make God’s will fit yours. Ask God to help you apply each day’s aspect of praying with power so that you would see results that honor Him. Pray each day for the individuals of your congregation as well as for the body of Christ as a whole.
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”
Ephesians 6:18 (NIV)
Please pray each day for God’s help in developing a lifestyle of prayer that contains His power.
Sunday: Pray for your church staff, the preaching and teaching that takes place, the church leadership, the volunteers that are helping in so many areas, the spiritual and financial health of the congregation, and the work of the missions ministry of the church. Pray for me (Tom Lemler) and the work of Impact Prayer Ministry.
Monday: Praying With Purpose. Ask God to help you to pray with pure motives and purpose. Pray that your pursuit of God would help you understand what His good and perfect will is. “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” James 4:3 (NIV)
Tuesday: Praying With Observation. Ask God to help you pay attention to the needs of people around you. Pray that you would seek God’s help in meeting the needs of those who need to know of Jesus. “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.'” Matthew 9:36-38 (NIV)
Wednesday: Praying With Worship. Ask God to help you honor Him in the way you pray. Pray that your conversations with God would always take place with an understanding of God’s holiness and worth. “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.'” Matthew 6:9 (NIV)
Thursday: Praying With Expectation. Ask God to help you grow in your expectation and belief that He will answer. Pray that you would be so closely aligned with God’s will that you fully expect Him to do what He says. “But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” James 1:6 (NIV)
Friday: Praying With Repentance. Ask God to help you see anything in your life that you need to repent of. Pray that God would forgive you and help you to turn your life back fully to Him. “Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart.” Acts 8:22 (NIV)
Saturday: Keep On Praying. Ask God to help you have both a consistency and a persistence in your prayer life. Pray that you would grow in your relationship with God through a constant communication in prayer. Pray that your persistence would help you to understand God’s will and His answer to your prayers. “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.” Luke 18:1 (NIV)
