Lifestyle of Prayer: Encourage (Week 2)

i

“A Lifestyle of Prayer”

 This week’s prayer focus: Encouragement!

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

“But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.
 Hebrews 3:13

As we continue to grow in A Lifestyle of Prayer, it is important to remember prayer should be a lifestyle, not an event.  View prayer as your first priority, not as the last resort.  This week our prayer focus will be the second of two weeks praying about encouragement.  We will pray about some ways that God says we can be encouraged — not just for our own encouragement, but so we will be better equipped to encourage others.  Pray each day for the individuals of the church congregation you attend as well as for the body of believers that meet together.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
Ephesians 6:18 (NIV)

Please spend time praying about each day’s specific focus on Encouragement.  With that focus in mind, pray for yourself, your family, your friends, neighbors, and all the “one anothers” we’ve been praying for over the past year.  Thank you!

Sunday:  Pray for your church, its staff and leadership, and for all of the preaching and teaching that takes place.  Pray for me (Tom Lemler) and the work of Impact Prayer Ministry.

Wednesday: Encouraged from being United with Christ.  Pray that the encouragement you have from being united with Christ would compel you to live like Christ.  “If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion.”  Philippians 2:1

Thursday: Encouraged by Sound Doctrine.  Pray that you would receive, and give, encouragement as you hold firmly to the sound doctrine of scripture.  “He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.”  Titus 1:9

Friday: Encouraged by Love.  Pray that your love for people would be an encouragement to both you and them.  “Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.”  Philemon 1:7

Lifestyle of Prayer: Direction

i

“A Lifestyle of Prayer”

 This week’s prayer focus: Direction!

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

“The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.”
Proverbs 21:1

As we continue to grow in A Lifestyle of Prayer, it is important to remember prayer should be a lifestyle, not an event.  View prayer as your first priority, not as the last resort.  This week our prayer focus will be on seeking direction!  There is no decision you make, big or small, that would not benefit greatly from seeking direction from God before you act.  As you pray, pray that you would not only seek God’s direction, but that you would follow it.  Pray each day for the individuals of the church congregation you attend as well as for the body of believers that meet together.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
Ephesians 6:18 (NIV)

Thursday: Directed by the Lord Himself.  Pray that the direction you seek would be set by God even when it is beyond your understanding.  “A man’s steps are directed by the LORD.  How then can anyone understand his own way?”  Proverbs 20:24

Friday: Directed by Godly Teaching.  Pray that the direction you seek would be learned by listening to the teaching of God.  “This is what the LORD says — your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: ‘I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.’”  Isaiah 48:17

Saturday Directed to Love and Perseverance.  Pray that the direction you seek would lead you into the love and perseverance of the Father and Son.  “May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.”  2 Thessalonians 3:5

 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

“He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’”
Revelation 21:5

As we continue to grow in A Lifestyle of Prayer, it is important to remember prayer should be a lifestyle, not an event.  View prayer as your first priority, not as the last resort.  This week we will focus on some of the aspects of being made new.  Whether you feel new or not, if you have been adopted into God’s family He has made, and continues to make, you new!  As you pray, pray that you would not only experience the newness of being in Christ but that you would share that newness on a daily basis.  Pray each day for the individuals of the church congregation you attend as well as for the body of believers that meet together.

Saturday New Attitude.  Pray that the removal of your old self will be complete as you live fully in a new attitude when you allow Christ to complete a renewing of your mind.  “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;  to be made new in the attitude of your minds.”  Ephesians 4:22-23

Lifestyle of Prayer: Christmas Purpose

i

“A Lifestyle of Prayer”

This week’s prayer focus: Christmas Purpose

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”  Isaiah 9:6

“’She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.’  All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:  ‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ — which means, ‘God with us.’”   Matthew 1:21-22

As we continue to grow in A Lifestyle of Prayer, it is important to remember prayer should be a lifestyle, not an event.  View prayer as your first priority, not as the last resort.  This week we will focus on some scriptures regarding the birth of Jesus and the names He was to be called.  Pray each day for the individuals of the church congregation you attend as well as for the body of believers that meet together.

SaturdayImmanuel.  Pray that your life is a constant reminder to those around you that God is with us and has come to help His people.  “They were all filled with awe and praised God. ‘A great prophet has appeared among us,’ they said. ‘God has come to help his people.’”  Luke 7:16

Lifestyle of Prayer: Unity (Revisited)

i

“A Lifestyle of Prayer”

This week’s prayer focus: Unity (Revisited)!

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

A year ago we began this “Lifestyle of Prayer” emphasis with a 40 day focus on praying people by name.  Next week we will return to a season of praying for one another by name, but I want to lead into that with a return visit to a prayer focus on Unity.  Save this guide to use in conjunction with the following weeks of individual names.  This week we will focus on different aspects of unity from God’s perspective.  It seems nearly everyone loves the idea of unity, if people would just agree with me — really we just want conformity, not unity.  Real unity comes when we decide it’s all about what God says, wants, and desires and not about me!.  Use the suggestions each day but most of all allow God’s Word to soak into your life and direct how you pray and who you pray for.  As you pray, pay attention to any changes and/or actions God would be calling you to make in that area.  Pray for a unity of spirit among believers in general and among your church family in particular.  View prayer as your first priority, not as the last resort.

“As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.  Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.  Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
Ephesians 4:1-3 (NIV)

Please spend time praying each day for godly wisdom in applying that day’s “unity” quality for yourself, your family, your friends, neighbors, and all the other “one anothers” in your life.  Thank you!

Sunday: Pray for Tom Lemler and the work God is doing through Impact Prayer Ministry.

Monday: Unity of mind.  Pray for a unity of mind among the people of God so that the work of the kingdom is not hindered.  “Also in Judah the hand of God was on the people to give them unity of mind to carry out what the king and his officials had ordered, following the word of the LORD.”  2 Chronicles 30:12

Tuesday: Unity of life.  Pray for unity in the families of our congregation and in the family of our congregation so that life together will be “good and pleasant”.   “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!”  Psalm 133:1

Wednesday: Complete unity.  Pray that your pursuit of complete unity in Christ would help others to see Jesus and the love of God in you.  “I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”  John 17:23

Thursday: Unity of spirit.  Pray for a unity of spirit among our church family that is based on our following Christ Jesus..  “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus.”
Romans 15:5

Friday: Unity of faith.  Pray for the maturity to get along with one another as we mature into a unity of faith through our knowledge  of, and relationship with, Jesus.  “until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”  Ephesians 4:13

Saturday Perfect unity.  Pray for a Christ-like love which will hold together in perfect unity all of the godly characteristics that God calls you to “put on” in your life.   “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
Colossians 3:14

SaturdayThe True Vine.  Pray that you would remain attached to Jesus as the true vine that provides the life and nourishment that you need.  “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.”  John 15:1
